Just checked the price to upgrade from pre-installed Windows 8 to Pro Pack is NZ$299 where as US price is US$99 (exclude tax). I'm shocked! How was it justified for such hiked upgrade price between 2 countries? At best with the currency exchange, it is calculated to NZ$124 (pre-tax)!! Yikes!

Absolutely agree with you! Found myself in the same position and it made me pretty anti. Seems like force-line selling: restrictive trade practice, monopoly rules. Surely the Commerce Commission could look into this.

Adobe recently got a 'please explain' (Can't remember who from, maybe the ACCC) about the price difference in their creative cloud pricing between AU and US, when the dollar was at parity (or better). They couldn't justify it, so they dropped the price to match the US price in AU and NZ (NZD adjusted).

Microsoft probably need a similar prompt.

If I am not mistaken MS were also asked, but I don't think happened there.

I found Dick Smith has NZ$99 for Pro Pack upgrade (from their web)... Certain retail outlets still blindly charging $299!

Vote with your wallet instead, go mint linux and libreoffice.

Or just phone up one of your locals and buy and oem license for about the same amount

EDIT: Seriously, this pricing 'scheme' makes me sick

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Microsoft's answer was "we charge what we can get away with.  We do not attempt to charge the same everywhere".
