Whenever I "Shut Down" about 5 minutes later it boots up again and wants to "Phone Home". Claims that there are problems with 3 files. Minidump xm.dmp, "Temp svsdata xxxxxx.xml" and "Windows MEMORY .dmp". After reporting back to Microsoft I can then shut down properly. Have only installed Firefox and Thunderbird, deleted Norton freeby, and unticked the box which says user has to log in to Microsoft. Have solved a lot of problems but this one has got me beat.

Any suggestions ??

A "Shut Down" button on the toolbar would be on my wishlist for Windows 8.1

Did it ever work? might be something about your hardware or motherboard

What do you mean by phone home?

To shutdown you can click from the Charms Bar

Configure the power button on your PC to shutdown instead of sleep

Windows key+I

Alt+F4 from the desktop

Or add a tile to call batch file c:/Windows/system32/shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Computer is a Samsung series 7NP700Z, new in Dec 12 (hardly used because of all the problems) and with windowe7 installed. Windows 8 went in in Feb 13, and Mar 13 and Apr 13 i.e. restarted back to7 and 8 reinstalled 3 times. Relying on Defender

Phone home is report back to M/soft. Always used shutdown from the Charms Bar, never used Sleep but if I use Restart it goes into endless loops for hours.

So you installed Windows yourself, not an OEM install?

I wonder if you are using the correct drivers for power management. Windows 8 shutdown relies on a kind of hibernate. If this fails then it will probably cause a dump. Alternatively it could be wrong storage drivers.

unplug network cable prior to shutting down, does this solve the problem?

I'd look into this also - Windows 8 is fussy about power management drivers.

Di you install the drivers from Samsung's website for it?

Thanks for all the suggestions. It now shuts down properly, Restarts in a reasonable time, controls the sensitivity of the touchpad and recognises anything plugged into the USB ports.
I had looked on the Samsung site a couple of times earlier and in the Support area there was no listings for Windows 8 for this machine. In the Updates for Drivers there were none newer that 13 months ago. However, after a LOT (a hell of a lot) of drilling down I eventually found where I could download updates.
