I have a Winword fault when trying to open Word 97 in Windows 98.

Please don't give me flack that I am hopelessly out of date and need to upgrade! This is only one of 6 computers in our business which I HAVE to keep running as it has a very old DOS-based programme which is essential for me to keep using.

The fault is "Winword caused an invalid page fault in module (unknown) at 0000:00be64b4" (followed by other numbers related to the registry??).

- I have googled the fault number with no success.
- I am only getting the problem when trying to open Word (all other programmes including the others in the M/Soft Office suite are working perfectly).
- I have deleted all the temp files
- I have changed the Normal.dot template
- I have scanned and disk cleaned etc.
- I have uninstalled Office and reinstalled.

Please please please is anyone able to help me out and suggest anything else I might try. Thank you.

The plot thickens! I removed that computer from the office network and Word opens no problem. I have reconnected to the network, and it won't open again.

Does that give someone a clue as to what might be happening, please??

Also, are you opening Word First then choosing file/open from Word before trying to open or import this file?

Might pay to make copies of the file first.

Sounds like the files wanting network access for some reason, are there any links or resources the file uses that perhaps are outdated or moved location?

It has been working perfectly well for yonks, so don't think converting Word will make any difference. The link hasn't given me any clues either.

Has to do with connecting to the network, but nothing has changed there either.

How practical is it for you to simply copy and paste the document into a new word file?

I can't open Word (first) to access any Word files on the main computer.

I also can't open any Word files via Explorer (but I can open Exel files etc).

Am not sure what you mean about copying files?

It's only Word I have having a problem with.

Perhaps I am not explaining my problem well. I can not open Word on the old computer at all, while it is connected to the network. So can't do anything with Word files however I try to access them.

You have 6 computers - is this problem occurring on all 6 of them or just the one you use?

Also, reading you last post, you say you can't open Word at all when the computer is connected to the network. Just clarify, you're only double-clicking an icon or selecting a menu option?

So can you open the file in question on the other computers?
i.e. copy it to a usb stick and save it on those computers.

If you can open it, can you then 'save as' to whatever format you use on the original computer i.e. win97
is the file a .doc or a .docx ?

edit: you might need to suss out the initial issue of word not opening up first to progress to the next issue of trying to get the file open. You said you reinstalled Word previously. Perhaps this needs to be completed again but first removing everything from the registery (check out the word help on MS site).

Can you start the computer on the network, then unplug the network cable and attempt to start word?

If word starts OK and is stable, what happens when you plug the network cable back in. and try to do something with the network..

All other computers in the office are able to access Word files from the main computer no problem.

Although:

When I open Explorer on the old computer and try to access a Word file on the main computer, I get the message: "can not find the file ... or one of its components. Make sure the file and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available".

Which would indicate there is something wrong with the filesharing, though remember I cannot open Word on the old computer.

When I uninstalled and reinstalled Word on the old computer, do all the registry bits not sort themselves out??

First thing would be to sort out opening Word - it may be something really simple. Find the normal.dot template, make a backup of it (say normal.bak) then delete it (normal.dot). Then try and open Word from an icon or menu selection.

Is Word required to run your Old DOS program?,

if not take it off the computer and only run the programs you have to,

You may have a bunch of corrupted registry entries, which could be a real PITA to fix, given how old the system is (most of the tools will unlikely work o such an old OS, and I certainly would be very careful about running any modern fixit tools on such an old system

I did what you suggested:
- I started the old computer on the network, then unplugged the network cable and started Word. It opened OK.
- I plugged the cable back in and tried to open a file from the main computer (from within Word).
- It asked me for a password to connect to the server, which we don't have.
- I then opened Explorer (while Word was still open) and tried to open a document from the server from there and that worked OK.
- I then closed Word, and tried again to open a document from the main computer through Explorer and got the message that the file was corrupted but did I want to try to open it anyway.
- I tried to open it and got the message "cannot open the existing " with a little square box in the message (think that means can not open the existing normal?).

Do that help further?
