Ok, I've searched the internet and cannot find a resolution to my problem.

I can't get sound via the HDMI cable from my PC to the TV. I know it's not the TV as sound via HDMI works fine via PS3 and i've tested it on two different TV screens so i'm convinced it's the video card.

I've checked all the obvious things - in Nvidea Control Panel under "setup digital audio" the TV screen is selected under HDMI.

In Windows 7 - Sound - Playback devices, i have right clicked to show disabled and disconnected devices.

I can see the following options in Playback devices:

Speakers
Headphones
Digital Audio (S/PDIF)
Digital Audio (S/PDIF)

Google tells me there should be an HDMI option too?

My video card is a Nvidea GeForce 9500 GT if that helps.

Any other suggestions?

Oh, and yes the volume on the TV is up :)

Using default drivers. They say up to date in device manager under geforce.

yeah i find the windows driver check sometimes gives bogus answers

i would go to here:

http://www.geforce.com/drivers

find and install the latest drivers for your card + os and then recheck your playback devices

i guess you tried this?

You have to select the right audio output from your laptop. Go to Control panel -> Hardware and sound -> Sound

Then you should set 'Digital Audio (S/PDIF)' as your output. You can test it to see if it works.

Additionally, you may have to do the same thing in the video player that you use. You should go to the audio settings of the video player and change accordingly

do you have the spdif cable from the mother board to the graphics card hooked up?

then select spdif as mention above

I have this problem everytime I rebuild my media centre. Essentially, Windows hangs on to the built in audio card.

Install the correct driver and ensure hdmi audio is selected if you have a custom option.

Right click the volume on your task tray and select playback devices, I disable all but the hdmi audio device as I never use any other output (I use my TV as a audio switch if that makes sense), but you can change what Windows uses to create output sound here.

Thanks guys, i believe it's either a driver issue or that the spdif cable from the mother board to the graphics card isnt connected.

I will take a look when i get home.

If the spdif cable simply isnt connected, would i still expect to see HDMI in Playback devices though?

Replace the vid card....seriously. It may just be too old . 9500GT is ancient.

Older cards dont have HDMI sound passthrough & may never work .
Some old vid cards may have an UNDOCUMENTED unlabled connector for DIGITAL audio, even then it still may not work

I had top replace my 9600GT (newer) for this reason. New vid card works perfectly.
The modern vid cards actually have ~sound card chip~ built onto the vid card & that does the HDMI sound.

Dunno, sorry. Most new cards should do HDMI audio, its expected/common now .
Im also has issues with fanless cards in the past, some of those can get so hot they damage nearby components (seriously) , perhaps the newer fanless cards run somewhat cooler ??

The cheaper cards wont have what you want, often 1x VGA, 1x digital (DVI OR HDMI)
You'll want a dual digital card at least then, ie perhaps a dual output card that doesnt have VGA.

Alrighty, it is not a driver issue - confirmed i have the latest.

I took the beast apart and there are no cables what so ever coming out of the video card so nothing to plug into mother board.

I thought the GeFource 9500GT did support this but maybe "1011" of all people is right after all - who would have though?

can you net just get a cable and plug it in. mist Motherboards and im pretty sure from reading that graphic card have SPDIF headers

No, you cant 'just' plug in a SPDIF cable . There may be no socket to plug this cable into on such an old card.
This is a quite old card. It was probably never indended for use with HDMI audio.
