Hi Folks,

I am looking for a decent backup program for windows 8.1. I was using the excellent windows 7 one but that is alas no longer available in windows 8.1

Basically I need a program that can be run on a schedule, will do a weekly full backup, nightly incremental and when the destination drive is full, will remove the old backups. I just need to backup files and folders one drive and dump it to another on the network. It would be useful if I could also choose which files and folders on multiple drives that I could include in the backup.

It needs to be mainstream (from a reputable vendor) that can be used in future windows versions.

I don't need to create system images, nor do want to use any of the built in windows stuff.

Have you considered one of the cloud backup vendors? E.g. CrashPlan or BackBlaze (who I use). Bit more of a set it and forget it set up going that way.

Thanks for your replies.

I am trying to avoid cloud solutions if possible, would prefer the old fashioned locally installed software.

I used to use windows home server - but moving to Windows Server at some stage in the future.

I use Cobian Backup, backing a laptop on a NAS. I've used it on the same laptop with Windows 7, then 8 and now 8.1. It's free, legit, does the job without fuss and should have enough tweakable settings to keep most users happy.

With CrashPlan you can back up to a folder or another local PC. Cloud backups are optional.

I've been using Cobian in various scenarios for a few years. The thing that slightly worries me now is Luis is trying to sell it off. Nothing stopping a bigger player from buying it and promptly stopping support and availability. Hopefully not, but you never know.

I use crashplan to backup without the cloud option. The automatic nature of it is what makes it so worthwhile in my opinion.

Cobian backup. used it on servers and pcs for years. Very good.

I also use batch fileas and unstoppable copier by road kill - great for backups with no versioning required.

I use Macrium. Basic free version or paid are their options. Paid does incremental and a few other things. I'm impressed with it.
