I hope someone can help here.

Two restarts ago Vista "installed" my HDD again.

Now Vista is saying that I must Activate Vista again, and that I need to buy a new key.

Why is this happening? Do I need to contact MS about this directly?

So I called MS and they have re-activated the software over the phone.

Well according to MS I will need to re-activate my copy of windows everytime I install/uninstall a new piece of software or hardware.

And that I will need to call them everytime to do this.

Is this true? As I have installed hardware/software and uninstalled it on this PC several times.

Maybe it was because I uninstalled 4 pieces of software and installed a webcam all at once?

I would image it was because of it reinstalling the HDD Driver because that is a central piece of equipment you could have imaged your harddrive and so copied vista so that would require you to re-activate.

Sorry, what I meant by HDD was not the disk with vista on it, its a disk which has XP on there and nothing else

i believe i have read somewhere in some forums and some people have experienced it (could not remember the context, could not find those posts now sorry) before! weird!! ermm ... the solution - there could even have been a fix but sorry just can't remember nor find the posts! (worse come to worse just re-activate, it should work. if it doesnt try again in a few hours, and again in a few hours, should work. i reformatted/reinstalled an oem and it worked at 3rd try! weird aye)

I cannot even use the update! It apparently does not apply to me! When it obviously does.

Ok it does not apply, becuase it is already installed! Ive had this update since 10/03/07 and it obviously doesnt work. The comments in freitasm's first link point out that some of them have already had the update yet still get the same problem as myself.

The re-activation with new hardware thing does not seem to have any real consistency to it... I added another 2GB of RAM and I had to re-activate but when I later added a new CPU it wasn't an issue. Two days later I formatted and did a clean install and activated with no issues. It's all a little odd
