Hey,

Any ideas or thoughts on the Surface Mini?

I've been looking at what's coming and this could well be something I'm interested in.

One rumour even talked about it being powered by a Bay Trail Atom, others say it will be ARM so who knows, and if that is true I'd call it a step in the right direction.

I really like Windows Phone and with recent updates that is set to get even better but Surface as it stands just doesn't meet my needs, nor do other Windows tablet options. For me tablets will always be a portable consumption device first, a productivity device second. I'm buying a desktop to be productive.

The iPad line is great but I can't justify the cost an iPhone newer than 4S, and that's old. Android are full of options with well priced tablets but I got burned with a mid-range phone not being able to update.

I'd prefer to have phone and tablet on the same eco-system.

Surface Mini looks like it might to beyond the 'Surface is the most productive tablet you can buy' line which is actually a good thing if you ask me.

Anyway, what you all think?

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

with the Windows 8.1 Update out in the wild, and the Windows Phone 8.1 update due soon, you're bound to see some new devices and form factors coming from both Microsoft and the OEMs but with nothing announced yet (apart from 4 new Nokia phone devices), its something that will only be rumour or speculation....

Having a $0 cost for Windows OS on a sub 9" screen device combined with a smaller OS footprint and memory requirement should open the door for a lot more devices in that 'cheaper' range - e.g. where the Galaxy and Nexus Tablets are currently playing.

As for the ARM vs Atom argument, if your primary use case for a tablet is consumption not creation and you will always have a desktop the an ARM device should fit the bill just fine.  You can plug in a monitor, keyboard, mouse and then RDP to your desktop from the ARM device if you need to access full software suites.
