Anyone else been struck down by this?

Installed a bunch of updates a few days ago, shut down the computer last night and rebooted to a black screen. Tried to system restore - but no restore point was made. No idea why one would not be made, it was last time I had to roll back after a dodgy update. Can't boot to safe mode or low graphics mode, will try command prompt tomorrow when I get back home.

Second time this year PC has failed to boot after windows updates!

Deleted fntcache.dat as suggested by the link in post above. Still booting to a black screen.

Yup, just had to full factory reset a friends laptop PC (after grabbing off all their Data from another machine) and what a pain... his error apprently started with your 'black screen' and after a couple hard resets (desperate to try getting it to work) gave him another black screen with the "automatically repairing" error described here: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1726133/preparing-automatic-repair-black-screen-error-loop.html

like I say, full 'refresh' required!

never seen anything like it in Win7, and after buying and using Win8.1 for about three months with numerous issues connecting to Exchange on Server2013 I aint gonna upgrade from win7 till it expires like XP did :)

it's funny i was looking at a top of the range $6000 laptop yesterday and guess what - it comes with windows 7 and optional win 8.1 !!!

i hope the OP gets it sorted

I'll get it sorted - have not been home much over the weekend. I've a cloned backup that's only a few weeks old - I was prompted to start cloning my OS drive after last time an update borked windows. Of course I'd only just put the case back together the day before the latest failed udpate...

What irks the most is there is no restore point.. why is there no restore point :(

My system wanted to do an reboot after installing updates on Friday 15/8
One of those updates caused my Android phone to no longer been seen by the system; thankfully I was able to do a system restore to figure out the issue.

Now I might disable auto update based on this ...

OP got it sorted.

Booted cloned OS drive from a while back, copied over a bunch of newer files then cloned the old over the newer (b0rked) OS drive. Switched back to newer but now older OS drive, installed new sound card and reward self with music.

I got the big BSOD and nothing I tried could boot it so sent the unit back to Prosouth in Dunedin who managed to fire it up. Sounds like a font issue which is quite annoying as I'm sure Bill won't cover my costs. ;-)

My Win8 HP laptop survived but the latest update won't play nicely with my Telecom VDSL modem. Sigh. I do love my iPad tho. :-)
