I am trying to delete some read only files that i have saved as a backup from an old pc and no longer need.

They are my Email profiles from Thunderbird.

Anyway having huge issues deleting them, and have attached screenshots to show.
Basically the files are read only and I can not get rid of the Read only attributes.
Have tried lors of things but I am lost.

Any help appreciated

You need to take ownership over the folder/files, and may have to give yourself full permission.

I totally know this and this is my issue.

I can not give myself admin rights on this folder, as per screen shots.

If you're logged in as an admin there's no reason you shouldn't be able to take ownership. Maybe there's something to do with inherited permissions?

When trying to change attributes this is happening.

I have been trying for ages to delete this file with no luck.

Tried, does not work.......access denied message again.
Throwing against wall is a good option at this point.

The admin box doesn't have a checkmark in it.

If you want to install TeamViewer PM me the user and password, along with the directory you want changed. I can remote in and have a go - you will be watching what I do so no security risk. Probably won't help if you're doing it right already but worth a shot.

I logged in and managed to get it done. The trick seemed to be:
- Resetting the owner even though it looked right
- Removing inherited permissions
- Granting full access

Then deleting. No idea why, but windows permissions have always seemed a bit odd to me - maybe because I don't fully understand them.

Properties > Security (TAB) > Advanced > Change Permissions > (Add your Windows User account), Replace all child objects permissions with inheritable permissions from this object (Tick Box).
If you are thinking throwing the external HDD against a wall, maybe you should just format the entire thing if there is nothing of value left on it.
