I have just bought 2= 1TB seagate sata 3.5" hdd and I have put one into my desktop pc and it doesn't recognize the drive I have a Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3V motherboard it comes up as primary drive how do I format it so as I can use as a slave or put another os onto it?

Have you gone into computer management (start -> run -> type "computer manage"), gone into the disk section, partitioned and formatted the disk?

maybe you have to change the drive priority in the BIOS?

timmmay: Have you gone into computer management (start -> run -> type "computer manage"), gone into the disk section, partitioned and formatted the disk?

Small correction: the above should be (start -> type "computer manage") (remove the run step)

otherwise start -> run -> type 'diskmgmt.msc' will get you what you want as well

I have put one of the 1TB hdd into an external enclosure windows won't format it comes up with hard drive in 3 sections

(G:) 350 MB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition) System reserved (F:) 350 MB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition) (E:) 930.83 GB RAW Healthy (Primary Partition)

Would have liked to attach screenshot but couldn't see how?

So how do I format this drive so as can install windows?

what does it say when you try to format or delete the existing partitions?

how is it connected to your PC?

shouldn't need to format anything.

make sure the connections are in the right order

make sure bios recognises it.

if bios recognises it then either the bios setting or the OS is to blame

if bios doesn't see it then your wiring is in wrong order/not connected

as above, the biggest partition is RAW, it needs to be formatted

I would delete all the partitions and start again

ah ... delete all partitions and quick format one or few NTFS. I don't know if better or worse but I always quick format.

The drives don't sound as they are new, and have likely been used in windows XP or 7. From memory windows 8.1 has a slightly different partition format. I suspect that you will need to remove the partitions and prep the disk before windows 8.1 will see it properly. Also, has the drive (or can the drive) be set to CSEL?

I have given up on the 2= 1TB hdd as I think they are bad, so instead I took a 1.5TB hdd out of a external drive and put that in my PC and installed win8 which Ive upgraded to 8.1.
My problem now is I want to retrieve the contents of my original hdd win 8.1 but I can't access them now I enclose screenshot of the drives. I there any way I can get these files back?

If they all all SATA, you could try putting the HDD you want to recover from into the external enclosure you removed the other drive from. Or was the external drive internals actually PATA?

Are the partitions allocated drive letters? Does the disk management admin control panel say they are healthy? Are they seen as NTFS partitions? Can you do "dir" on them from a command prompt? Can you not see the files due to security profile? Can you, in admin mode, make the entire drive readable by everyone?

Is there an error message or something when you try to access it and get your files?
