Had a power cut and on restarting XP it had reverted to a different mode. Fixed most things except control panel. Instructions say to click "Switch to Classic Mode" but I don't see this.  My Control Panel LH pane shows Folders and RH pane says "Pick A Category.  How do I change the RH side to show icons (like it used to) ?

Thanks.

For starters - unless if you've got a really really good reason to be running Windows XP (like an app is not compatible with later versions) then you should upgrade to Windows 7 ASAP. Windows XP is no-longer supported and doesn't get security updates anymore, it has almost been a year since Microsoft ceased support.

I know this is not at all helpful to what you're trying to do but there is no real reason people should be still running XP.

Look under View and see if you can change the left hand pane.

I've tried that, and all the obvious things..... but not luck. Irritating thing is I've done this before but can't remember the solution !

You shouldn't be so opinionated.  There's many good reason to use XP and the first one is I choose to !

Are you getting in to Control Panel from the Start menu or some other way?

Hey, look... I have a 2nd machine with Win 7.  I never use it. I hate it!  It's too different, most of the software I have for XP is
not tranferable to it...  or not easily. Nor do I want the hassle of installing it all again with different hardware.

It's working just fine, thank you and I intend to keep it that way !!

Yes, I dragged a shortcut from the Start Menu to the desktop.

Ahhhhh I got it!!!   The button marked "Folders" restores the "Switch To Classic View" option. And after that, click Folders again.

Thanks for helping me!

pfft, so what.  :-)
At least 50% of XP PC's Ive seen werent being updated via winupdates when it was supported. It wasnt such a huge issue, for Joe Average, really.
The real world security issue is the user, not the OS . Thats why its often the same people, & the same sort of people who get infected PCs .
XP will die off as older PC's get written off. Sure, its better to u/g to Win7/8, but its hardly the end of the world if you dont .

60% of all Android devices should be replaced as they arnt being updated, cant be updated, and have a known security flaw that wont be patched on 'old' versions .

Funny you say that.... i wont upgrade to windows 8 because it doesnt have the windows 2000 theme where buttons have depth. So I am sticking with windows 7.
