I have just setup an Acer E15 laptop with Windows 8.1

I was hoping to install VLC to it but I'm having a devil of a job ! I have a 600 KB file Called VLC player I've downloaded from the VLC sito to the desktop. I think it's .exe but can't see the file extensions yet.
On running it, it seems to install telling me to click Accept and then Finish to exit.

But after that, nothing ! No prompt to run, no sign of it in Explorer, or in a search and it doesn't appear in the Uninstall list.

I have done this "install" a three times now and the same thing each time.

Any help appreciated

Where did you download it?

Perhaps try installing it (and anything else you need) from ninite:

https://ninite.com/

I find it, along with chocolatey, invaluable when repaving or upgrading the os.

Yes, that might be it... where it came from. I just googled "download vlc". I've since found a 20 MG zip file which I could download
in XP. Doing it on the laptop with IE failed - it didn't seem to keep the right filename. I've got it all there now and just about to try another install.

Well who knows what you have got by googling download VLC and getting whatever it is.

Correct site is videolan.org

You probably have got some backdoor trojan installer or something.

I may be there... there was no setup file and clicking vlc.exe just brought it up and all seems to be working.
Suppose that's right....

VLC is up there with firefox for spammy download sites so I would still check exactly what the executable you ran was and where it came from.

LOL... that's be right!! No, it was videolan I'm sure and I thought it was the on line installer @ 600k.
It has a blue & Gold shield on an icon showing an opened box. I was using IE not FF which i'm more used to). Plus a new laptop and OS. Lucky I got anywhere I suppose.

It (the Laptop) claims to have McAfee protection.... The eventual file I got was vlc-2.1.5-win32.7z

The blue and gold shield just means it will ask for permissions to change stuff on the system. It doesnt actually mean things are safe or anything.

Right... ta. It doesn't show in the list of programs you can uninstall, so I guess I haven't got it right... but it works.

Thanks for the malware link. I ran it up and it found over 400 things! Sheeks... only got online with it yesterday!

That VLC thing, the page I went to was http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html. There's 3 choices and I choose the middle one '7 zip package'.
A closer llok says "No Installer needed'. Perhaps that's whay i never had a Setup file ?

Anyway, I have the file Jase2985 suggested so will change to that is any problems. Although now I'm wondering if I should have the 64 bit version ?

restore your laptop to factory state. it's gone case with thta tmany viruses

if you have only just got it do a system restore to before you downloaded the "bad files"

Wasn't sure which restore (Factory settings or system) but decided on factory.

Started it all going, but then told I had to have it plugged in.. so waiting for the battery to run down to complete the first of 3 recycle chargings.
