I am not sure if this should be here or in Lan, please move as needed.
I have a WD drive attached to a Linksys Smart AC1750 router that provides my home wifi network.
Over the wifi connection I can read from the drive and I can write to the root of the drive from my Win7 laptop but not to folders on the drive, nor can I move a file from the root to the folder. When I try I get "You need permission to perform this action".
If I connect the drive to the laptop via USB I have no issues.
What do I need to do to be able to copy a file from the laptop to a folder on the drive via wifi?
Thanks.

Attach your WD drive to the laptop.
Open Windows Explorer.
Right-click the folder(s) that you want to share.
click : Properties > Sharing > Share > Everyone* > Share
Attach your WD drive to your router and try again.

EDIT

* You could specify a specific user instead of "Everyone"

Couple of possibilities....

the format of the USB drive may be NTFS and the firmware of the Linksys may only have read-only support for NTFS.  Changing the format of the drive to FAT32 (format from the router? may help.

The sharing on the Linksys will have security options.  You may need to set user access to read+write or create a new user account on the linksys that has write access and the default user (anonymous?) has read-only access..

Have you configured the access permission to the drive in the router GUI?

BTW worst user manual EVER...

I connected via USB but that did not solve the problem. Access to the drive has been set to everyone. The message I get is "You require permission from Unix User\Root to make changes..."
Thanks.

Hi peejayw, if you are having file/folder permission issues, you can try the following troubleshooting steps recommended by the Microsoft Support here, if you haven't done so already. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/you-need-permission-to-perform-this-action/17051bab-a5a7-4395-8ed2-bae4bdb99ae7?tab=question&status=AllReplies#tabs

If the problem persists, I'd suspect the network drive access is being restricted by either a firewall or by your router settings.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Thanks but that is Windows 8 and I have Windows 7. It just wont give me access to change anything, keeps saying permission denied, grrr!

Have you tried a drive formatted with the FAT32 file system?  Might be worth a go to see if the behaviour changes.  Perhaps just use a spare USB flash drive to start with.

You are likely aware that reformatting a hard drive from NTFS to FAT32 or vice versa will erase the content of the drive.

If you want to reformat reformat in NTFS. Don't reformat to FAT32.

I really dont think its anything to do with the drive format, its something to do with the network. If I connect the drive via usb I can change ownership of the drive from unix to me but when I connect it back to the router its back to unix/root and everything i do to change permissions comes back with a "permission denied."
