Certainly I am assuming even if it does, manufacturers will invest dollars into making it happen. But I am wonder, if for example you have a tablet currently on Windows 8.1, can you just throw in the upgrade and have everything work okay, or is it more complicated than that...

Windows Update checks to make sure your device is compatible before offering Windows 10 to it

Will be very very rare for a Windows 8.1 machine to not be able to run Windows 10

Isn't the driver model still the same between Windows 8 and 10?

There's a good question. I suspect there will be some minor differences. Hopefully that doesn't cut out major chipset designs for mobile devices.

I might be misunderstanding with respect to mobile devices but I assume you mean mobile phones etc.  Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 are two different beasts, don't confuse them with each other.

Well no, I meant tablets and phones. But your right WP 8.1 is a whole different beast, and compatibility issues might be stronger with phones because of it. Then again, there aren't many handsets, so they probably have been extensively tested. There are a lot more tablets than phones.
