Have to laugh

My mum wanted XP installed on their new laptop so she did not have to learn how to use it but my dad said no.
Most of the people probably either had sub standard machines or just did not want to learn how to use it.

Mainly after Business features for training and the better security like bitlocker.
Want to be able to connect it to AD to use Group Policys.

Etc.

Mainly just for training.

For some reason Manhinli's blog won't let me post comments on the Windows Vista Birthday.

Given the topic of this thread, it seems appropriate to post my thoughts here instead:

"How were your thoughts on Vista over this past year?"
It's bloatware that the majority of PC users neither want nor need.

"What do you want to make happen on Vista over the next year?"
For MS to fix the many bugs, and quit this stupid crusade to force people to move away from XP.

"What about the 'Wow' that they said that would start? "
Yet another ridiculous example of ill-conceived MS hype.

The most sensible idea is for people to sign the "Save Windows XP" petition here, in the hope that MS will listen:

71,000+ people have already signed, and it's just remotely possible that enough groundswell will be generated to force MS to pull their heads out of the sand and take notice

I have to say that Windows XP is a very good operating system and can't see any reason for most organisations to upgrade at the moment.

I know the Business I am working for at the moment has no reason to upgrade at the moment (unless they want to get rid of the novell servers) as XP is a very stable and if configured right secure platform.
I am sure all those laptops that have gone missing here in the UK did not have encryped file systems though.

Can't comment much on the home user side.

XP will be around for quite a few years yet before Vista will really take hold.

And when SP3 will be released early this year, it will give Vista functions to XP. Who needs then Vista anyway?

Vista is certainly pretty. After using OSX and XP for a while, Vista seems so...illogical. Who stole the 'run' command? :)

Right-click the Orb, select Properties, go to Customize and there's an option to show RUN.

You can usually type in the Start Search box (where the run command use to be) and it will usually bring up the program/command you are trying to run at the top of the menu.
You can even search for the run command as well just by typing in run.

Have to wonder at times who designs these new interfaces and what there reasoning behind them is.
You can always revert to the old start menu any day though instead of having to re-train everyone.

Vista had good ideas and I like the look, Sadly they infested in the DRM, bloat and forced you to have "signed drivers" which cost developers thousands to register and "test".

You can turn off all those "signed divers" "error reporting" "are you sure you want to run this program" "system file checking" "transitions"in XP and it runs much more reliably and quite noticeably faster. I use 10 PC's in my daily role and the ones I turned off all the bloat and web intergration have run PERFECTLY for over 12 months and I can see Vista being the same reliable beast if coaxed.

Vista needs a mode where you could turn all that off and go back to the "expert mode" where if you made a mistake it could be catastrophic but we geeks love "I tripped over the power lead" crashes!

Also the lack of Virtulisation legality killed off my early experimentation so I'm only starting to look at it now (A work requirement and tinkering project)

I've used Vista on my work laptop for nearly a year now (started in March last year). It has been fine - not had to do anything drastic like a reinstall yet. I have had it 'hang' on me once or twice, but to be fair, I never shut it down - I just close the lid.

I see a lot of home users in my job, and fix all sorts of silly things - and the ones who have Vista never have as serious problems software-wise than the ones with XP. Maybe the malware writers haven't had a really good crack at Vista yet - but I see XP problems a lot more.

My only criticism of Vista is that when it does go belly up with malware/software it doesn't like (pretty rare), it really throws it's toys (ie, will not boot at all). Other than that - I don't mind it.

Heaps of malware has been written for the Windows platform including Vista. It's just how the user handles security.

To be fair, I haven't had many problems with Vista, but I still like XP over Vista as it just runs way more smoothly (512mb of RAM maybe the reason, but it was the minimum requirement :) ) and the fact it boots up 3 times faster (I loaded 2 times as much software on XP and all those drivers and still get a faster machine!)

One thing is certain. The "Wow" never actually started.

Fair point - XP is way faster than Vista on the same hardware. Vista does run nicely on a high spec machine though (It runs like mud on 512, not much better on 1Gb).

Vista's networking is a lot more fussy too.

The network is more fussy because it now includes a more robust firewall, with inbound and outbound connection control, per area (Home, Work, Public). This feature means you don't need to install third party software firewall for example, so I see it as a good feature.

As for minimum hardware requirements, every generation required more. This is true from Windows 3.1 (it required a 386SX at least to run in 386 Enhanced Mode - the 286 wouldn't do it), Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (very good one), Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista.

Intentionally skipped Windows Me. And Windows 1.0 of course.

The same is true for Mac OS X for example, and any other OS...
