The enclosure is still being sold (but I have had it for at least two years, first used on Windows 8) e.g. http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=ENCWEL0603

The Welland site only mentions Windows as high as Windows 7 and there are no drivers for it.

The issue is that if my HP laptop running Windows 10 is started with the enclosure attached, it seems to takes ages to start the laptop.

If the enclosure is not attached then Windows 10 starts up in seconds.

If have checked the BIOS settings and the first location for checking is the HP Internal Drive (now an SSD).

Naturally, I could start the laptop without the enclosure and then add it soon after the laptop has booted.

I prefer not to as sometimes I forget and one of the bays in the enclosure has a disk which is used (amongst other things) for FileHistory backup and a Windows 7 Weekly Backup.

Any thoughts?

Hi, I had a similar issue and I turned off hibernation and it fixed it, my PC would wake then restart. I just have plain sleep with hibernation off and it resumes from sleep as per normal.

Sorry, I didn't read your question correctly as you have said it was on startup, does it resume from sleep ok?

The hibernate off may still help as that stops fast startup. Worth a try to turn fast startup off. Easy to set it back on if it doesn't do anything.

I had issues with that ME603s enclosure and contacted welland who sent me some custom firmware. My particular issue was that I could format a drive using the ME603 but the drive would not be recognised in other machines. Drives formatted in other machines would not be recognised in the ME603.   Firmware fix corrected this but disabled hotplugging.

It is difficult to find rock solid external docks which also work well with windows OS -- there are often issues whether with firmware, performance, or hardware (ac adapters have been my main point of failure).  I bought 3 or 4 from jaycar (digitech i think) which have been pretty good but even one of those recently failed .

I tried the same adapter and basically found the machine wouldn't boot when connected. It might have been "slow" but I would have only given it an extra 20-30 seconds before giving up anyway.

Took it back and got a different toaster style one that seems fine. Was just a red generic looking thing off ebay.

The drive not reading thing sounds like sector size screwaround stuff, really annoying and undocumented on many enclosures I have found.

edit: that not booting problem was on windows 7, just got to the logo and then nothing after that. Never tried it on 8 or 10.

Resume from sleep is OK and fast.

check your bios to ensure that USB Boot is disabled, or at least down the list from your internal hdd.

I disabled USB Boot and made sure my laptop drive was first on the list.

No luck with solving this issue.

Without the USB dock attached, as soon as the 'Press the esc key for Startup Menu' appears, the BIOS menu is accessed.

With the USB dock attached, I takes 50 seconds of continually (just in case it isn't registering) pressing the esc key to get the BOIS menu.

Bootup after the BIOS Menu is pretty quick.

I have googled and googled, I think I found a similar issue reported on the HP Forum for an SD card attached, but there was no solution.

So I think I am giving in and will either put up with it or attached the dock once the laptop has booted.

Thanks for everyone's input.
