Has anyone else experienced this problem, and found a fix, please?

My old ‘reserve’ laptop running MS Vista Home Basic, has for the past month repeatedly refused to download three updates claimed to be 'ready for downloading’; KB3161664 and KB3164033 (‘security updates’) and KB3162835 (‘update for vista’).

I tick them , click ‘download’ and the updater claims to be ‘downloading 3 updates 0 KB total 0% complete’.
But it never actually completes the download!
I leave it for hours, and the % never rises. Twice I have left the laptop on all night (set to ‘never sleep’) and the next morning it still shows…0% complete’.

I don’t think I have missed or declined any previous important updates, the absence of which might obstruct these subsequent updates.
The laptop appears to have ‘SP3 pack’, as it downloaded updates for that in August.

Although I prefer to be notified when updates are ready, and make the decision myself, I did try changing updates to automatic to see if that worked. But no success that way either.

I tried updating via my home wifi , via a motel wifi, and via a 3G Vodafone USB ‘dongle’, so the issue cannot be my home broadband connection.

MS Security Essentials on the same laptop continues to update regularly, as recently as yesterday.

I Googled a keyword description of the problem, and found some more or less similarly described experiences, but their claimed solutions either did not apply in the case, or the links to solutions no longer existed.

Can anyone offer suggestions, please?

You can try going to https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/ and manually downloading the updates from there...
