My uncle called me on Saturday asking if I could help with his computer not connecting to his WiFi, even though his phone and smart TV were connected fine.
I was having trouble getting him to do some things for me, so I called on Sunday.

What I found was that the start menu (left click) does not work, search does not work, notifications does not work and settings does not work .. so lack of WiFi wasn't the only issue.
Not having start/search and settings really limited what I had access to, so I took the laptop home with me.

I logged into my account (admin) that I had created the last time I assisted with the laptop and eventually after 45 minutes of "setting things up" I found that my account was also corrupted with the same issues.

I left the system for 6 hours running sfc /scannow via admin Powershell .. in those 6 hours it did not do anything.

At the moment I am on the verge of restoring the system via the hidden recovery partition, however I am also thinking that a clean install from the Microsoft ISO media will be easier

My question - can I still download a clean version of the ISO from Microsoft and would a system that has an OEM key stored in BIOS allow me to activate the clean install?

Get into the Control Panel - Power Options, then click 'Choose what the buttons do' on the menu on the left.

Click the 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' option at the top and then uncheck 'Turn on Fast Startup'.

Click Save Settings then restart the computer.

99% sure that will fix all of the issues.

yes to both.
Its often the quickest & easiest fix .
Of course backup data first , and make sure you have install keys for programs such as Office

Holding down the shift key while selecting restart from the logon screen allowed me to get to the troubleshooting area, allowing me to reset the system while keeping the user personal items.
I didn't think this had worked as while I had plugged the laptop into the wall, I had forgotten to turn on the power.

However, turned it had worked ...

1101 - thanks for the answer, I'll remember that the next time if this happens again
