Is there any way to get Windows to echo the display on one monitor to a different one using different technology and resolution? I have HDMI and VGA on different cards. Both work fine, but not at the same time. Is it possible to get Windows to work with both simultaneously?

What is each monitor plugged into? A discrete video card (if so, what model) or onboard motherboard graphics (if so, what type)?

The HDMI card is Geforce 8200. Not sure about the integrated graphics. It also comes up as GeForce.

It's a perfectly common supported scenario - providing your motherboard supports having integrated and external GFX cards in operation at the same time. Some only allow you to select one or the other in the BIOS.

You are right. I confused this PC with another one. I tend to do that kind of thing a lot. Apologies. This one has the GeForce 8200 chipset with both HDMI and VGA integrated graphics. If I connect one and disconnect the other, each one works. But if I have both connected, I only get HDMI. Is there any way to get both of these to work together, or do I need another card?

Ok, I am part-way there. I now have display on both monitors. Unfortunately, Windows has chosen the lowest common denominator and reduced the HDMI resolution to 1368x768, which is the highest the VGA monitor is capable of. There is no longer any option to set it back to 1080p. I don't suppose there is any way to get each monitor to work at a different resolution?

If you want the same thing on both monitors, then no, it will always drop to that of the worst screen. You have to change to extend to have different things on the 2 screens.

If its the one I tried ages ago it was really laggy, it just did a full screen window on the second monitor and copied the first screen over in software at about 15fps making a considerable CPU hit. Mind you things have moved on from the first of the core CPUs and crummy 128 meg graphics cards go that might perform OK now at the low resolutions the OP needs.

I'm thinking I may just upgrade the other monitor. Then of course I have to double the HDMI. I have a splitter that can do that but it seems like overkill.

I have stumbled onto a pretty good compromise. My Nvidia controller gives me slightly better resolution options than Windows, so I can go up to 1440x900, which isn't too bad on both screens. And when I want to watch a video, I can quickly and easily switch back to a single monitor with Win+P, which automatically returns to 1920x1080 resolution. That's not bad.
