I have a new Asus laptop with Vista installed and it is so slow it is driving me mad. What can I do to fix this?

Have you turned off all the glitter of VISTA, Control Panel \ Performance Information and Tools might be a good place to start.

Could be the Phishing Filter or windows defender.

Is it slow on other computers as well? ie is it that your Internet connection is slow, not the PC

Have you tried surfing the web with another browser

When you're using the browser, do you notice that the CPU utilisation goes up, notebook's fan starts up etc?

This is more specific. What kind of connection are you using? Is this happening all the time or just some times? Could be your ISP?

Do you have any antivirus or antispyware installed? When was the last time you run a full scan?

Try turning the phising filter off to see if it helps.

Are you using your ISPs DNS servers or something else?

Do you have any proxy configured on your browser?

At a glance, I'd say its your connection as well.

All though the phishing filter is a good point.
You could try downloading Firefox and then see if you have the same problem. I've noticed in the past that the filter does cause slowness. Alternativly, turn it off. If problem still persists, THEN try downloading Firefox.

On my Hp dv6303tx running vista ultimate 64bit ( Core2Duo T5300 1.73 Ghz, 2GB Ram. )
I find Seamonkey about twice as fast as either IE& or Firefox.
Also helps to disable Aero and all the eyecandy (including the sidebar)
Quite good then (but you might as well be running W2k really.)
Have you thought about dual booting a Linux distro?
I find Ubuntu runs really sweetly on mine.

Seamonkey eh? Haven't heard of that one before, might have to check it out.

Another good in is Opera. Its actually pretty quick, and doesn't go into mem hog mode like Firefox sometimes can. Also has a built in torrent client.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. Some of them I totally didnt understand since I am not an advanced user, however, I did check out the phishing filter and it was not connected. Anyway, I downloaded Firefox and guess what, even Windows is fast now!

Dont ask me why. Slingshot said our connection was fine after the speed test, but anyway, it is working well now.
