Hello.

This isn't quite how I envisaged spending the end of 2018.

I went to my parents for xmas, and Dad gave me his laptop saying it wasnt working.

It wont boot to Windows and is in a repair loop.

Initially it had a BSOD error for Bad-System_config which I fixed by following these instructions from a YT video:

1. Type cd d:\windows\system32\config and hit Enter. (change drive letter to your drive letter) 2. Type MD backup and hit Enter. 3. Type copy *.* backup and hit Enter. (Allow file copy to complete task) 4. Type CD regback and hit Enter. (You should see registry hive files listed Default, SECURITY, Software, SYSTEM. 5. Type copy *.* .. and hit Enter. 6. To confirm copy process, type A and hit Enter. 7. Now Reboot your PC.

That error is now gone, but it still doesnt load windows.

Now I have a error in the srtTrail log that says the bootres.dll is corrupt.

All the repair options in the Advanced Troubleshooting menu fail to run.

Sfc /scannow and chkdsk /f /r have not fixed the problem.

Before I head further down the Google rabbit hole, has anyone here managed to fix this issue without losing apps or files?

(I have a backup of the hdd in case this is not possible)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just reload/install Windows 10 keeping the personal stuff... Quick way to get rid of problems and ones you haven't found yet.

Further...

You can spend ages tracking issues...

Use MS Media Creation Tool to get the latest version on Win 10 onto a USB stick... Probably 8GB required...

Hmm, sfc is the official way to fix corrupted system files. Can you confirm you were running that command from a win10 boot usb?

If so, I guess the only thing you can do is reinstall. Reinstalling doesn't have to delete your files, though it will cause apps to become uninstalled (still present on the filesystem, but without their start menu entries or registry keys).

Hmm, now that I think about it, Win10 has a built in reset function. I guess you should be able to trigger this from an install usb or recovery environment, though I don't know how it differs from reinstallation. Since you have a backup, try the reinstall and see if you are happy with the results, then restore from backup.

I suppose you could also simply copy bootres.dll from a working PC or install USB. I have a feeling that won't really work though. Windows is really finicky about those things.

@gordy7 the only reason I havent tried that yet is because I dont know if the laptop has 32/64 or US/UK installed.

@ripdog I was running those commands from the Command Prompt option in the Trouble shooting menu that comes up after Windows failed to load.

I have not booted up from a USB or optical disc.

Agree, bootres.dll being corrupt comes across as a spurious error for me.... isn't that the file that contains the boot logo amongst other things?

Do you have an idea of how far in it is getting? Is it legacy boot or UEFI boot on a Windows 8 or later device.

I dont think its getting very far at all.

It comes up almost straight away with "Preparing Automatic Repair".

Then...

Diagnosing Your PC

Attempting Repairs

Automatic Repair couldnt repair your PC.

It's quite an old laptop (Sony VGN-AW15G) so no UEFI.

The HDD was replaced a while ago with an SSD with Windows7 and later upgraded to Win10.

I've been at Dad to buy a new PC for ages, but he's very attached to this behemoth.

He *thinks* the trouble started after an unexpected shutdown during a power outage.

If you can't do that, run a chkdsk surface scan to know the damage is not physical.

You can create a boot USB from another w10 machine.

I have created a bootable USB from the MCT, but it is asking if I want to install 32 or 64 bit, and then Pro or Home.

If I get it wrong, Windows will be unlicensed???

Looked up your Sony laptop.... Has a 64 bit CPU....

You won't loose your Win 10 licence if you have a stuff up anyway...

Looks like it was originally shipped with Vista Home Prem.... Had a few updates!! :-)

I would try Win 10 Home 64 bit for re-installation...

You want the repair option from the USB.

It the laptop has been through Vista, Win 7 to Win 10 then it may be better to re-install (keeping personal info) rather than do a repair.

If it's not too late, could be worth checking if the boot issue is not due to something simple like AHCI / IDE mode has defaulted back the wrong setting due to extended power loss / low CMOS battery.

Vista HDD was ditched at some point.

Win7 was a clean install, then upgraded to Win10.

The repair option from the bootable USB also fails to do a repair.
