i am having trouble reformatting/installing xp pro on a pre installed vista on my vaio laptop, i just bought it new- model# vgn-ns190j, the reason why i got it was for using it so i can use alldata (car repair )in it but alldata does not have any fixes nor microsoft. my only option left is to install another os, everytime i try to install xp, i get the error message with the blue screen, i even got into the bios of this laptop but the options on pretty much everything is highlighted gray, meaning i cant even open or see the hard drive. called sony but they said call microsoft.

What exact Bluescreen message are you getting?

What version of XP are you installing?

Perhaps try with a Service pack 3 disk if the one your using is SP1 or older? If you don't have access to one, you can slipstream SP3 into any existing XP disk using this tutorial.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news here but unless Sony have changed their Warranty terms and conditions you've just voided your Vaios Warranty. They do NOT like you installing a new OS, even if it's the same OS but not done with one of their disks. Hardware warranty might still be fine, but you'll get NO support from them on re-installing your OS or if your OS actually causes any hardware to break (Rare but does happen) then that hardware won't get covered either. Sony are very similar to Apple in this respect. I had a customer who had to re-install his Vaio back in the UK, the OS was completely screwed so he installed XP SP2 on it (The same OS it originally came with) but he couldn't find the disk that came with it so used another, then was silly enough to own up to that on the phone to Sony after the install wouldn't work, they refused outright to help, hence he ended up coming to me.

Anyway if you're having trouble installing and you end up getting a blue screen, your best bet is to find out (From the Sony website or via google) if your laptop has a SATA hard drive, if it does, you'll need to obtain the SATA drivers, then put them on a floppy, get hold of a USB floppy drive and at the start of your XP installation press F6 when prompted, to install external SATA/SCSI device drivers. Windows XP doesn't do too well with installing make-shift SATA drivers during installation, to update later. If it finds a driver that's close enough in it's setup files, it'll install it, no matter how many times it's going to blue screen during/after installation. That could be where your problem is coming from. If that doesn't work try the most up to date XP disc you can get your hands on, preferrably as previously suggested with SP3 slipstreamed onto it.

Failing everything else suggested you may have to install Vista and live with it or take it to a professional and see if they can force an installation onto it from a virtual machine using a ghosting program or something, they can then prep the installation with all the appropriate drivers for the installation, before it moves over. You can of course try this yourself if you feel comfortable doing it and have the appropriate ghosting software with licenses but most don't.

maybe you could help me on how to set or get rid of the bios security, coz the options i need to do are all gray out- i cant even select it...

tried the slipstream and still, right at the end of installation, i get the error...damn, where in my screen turnns all blue....0x0000000009, 0xooooooooooooo7, oxoooooo, and so on

Give us the full text of the error?

If you cant be a**ed writing it out, take a picture of it and post it on image shack or something!!!

Also give us the model of the laptop?

This is likely to be a device driver and you will need the drivers slipstreamed into your Windows install if the hardware is causing Windows to fail to start.
