I'm sure there are lots of things people would like to see fixed in Vista that i think MS MUST fix in Windows 7 for it to be worth calling a new OS.

Example:

1) Files transfer from:
- 1 disk to another
- 1 network to another
- within a zip folder to the outside world
- 1 hard drive to DVD

Currently they are extremely slow. Sometimes they also cause the whole system to become slow ... why?!!

2) Sleep problems
- laptop goes to sleep in middle of windows update when you accidentally close the lid
- computer goes to sleep in the middle of file transfer (within Vista, not due to 3rd party app incompetence)
- computer does NOT go to sleep sometimes even without anything running/happening (some folders and ie open only)

could this be a bit late in the game for windows 7? I heard on Windows Weekly the other day that MS are hoping to have a much fast RTM than with Vista, ie one or two betas then an RC and then RTM. It's already up to the second beta build I think, so I'd have thought MS are in the process of polishing it off right now, rather than taking on additional features or fixing things that weren't already slated to be fixed.

That said, we could easily have a "tell MS what you want to see fixed in Windows 7 SP1" ;)

You can easilly change this in the power settings. Why would you want the computer to hibernate when you close the lid?

I don't see much point in this thread, as pointed out, a bit late in the game, and I am sure there are many many other places discussing the exact same thing, including official Microsoft channels...

But that said, my pet hate with Vista (and I wonder if it will be the same in 7), is resorting files in folders
eg; sort by date rather than name (to find the latest added)

I find with Vista it takes forever, and many times it won't resort at all, my large movie folder...with XP, its instant.

interesting... i dont seem to have any of these problems and i've been running vista for a long time now on hardware that isnt really quit up to spec...

regarding the "accidentally shutting lid of laptop and vista goes to sleep in middle of update".... surely thats not an OS issue, rather its a user issue? i set mine to "do nothing" when i close the lid anyhow so I wouldnt encounter this problem.

the only real problem i had was that IE7 just wouldnt run - crased on maybe 80% of web pages. the IE8 beta 2 seems to have sorted that for me now.

Are you running Vista SP1? Those things got improved a lot with SP1. I do a lot of network copying (of large files) in my Office and it works fine. I havent seen any problems since installing Vista SP1.

What do you mean by "within a zip folder to the outside world" ??

For all of the above 'problems' you might need to look into Power Options and configure:
1) What happens when lid is closed
2) Change when the computer goes to sleep

Most of the time in Vista, the Sleep/Hibernate problems are caused due to a bad Video driver. Might be worth looking into your video driver support too.

Interesting. But Windows Update - in theory - is only needed once a month, with very rare exceptions. It's only once a month, and you close the lid while it's running?

Seriously though you can change the behaviour for example to if you close the lid and it's A/C powered then do nothing... Because you only run Windows Update while powered, right?

well we don't normally do stupid things but that was at 2am ... no, no alcohol involved ;p accidents happen but was hoping that time ms engineers installed airbags but they didnt. had insurance in terms of system restore so it was ok. yup now the lid does nothing :) and always powered and batteried up while doing anything mauricio!

i guess you're right. my 64-bit dell's ok. but got my wife a vaio and after getting rid of her vaio-ware, tried to extract VLC media player from its zip download. 64mb (about 200 files) took 60 mins to extract from the zip with AVG8 turned off. then tried to burn a 3 gig mpg file onto dvd with my dell and took 90 minutes. like ... what the? yeah i know to use the 3rd party app like roxio and nero now :) takes 15 mins. and data transfers over networks are at 1MBps and no googling tips didnt help. hmm ...

ok i shall stop ranting but those file transfer things work much faster (though still never close to specified max) in XP.

I agree XP feels faster in a lot of ways. But as said before it's probably late for something new to be in Windows 7, since it's being prepared for public beta soon.

But it is not late to fix things. During the beta people will be able to provide feedback and these things should show up...
