Hi
Hopefully someone out there can help me...

I have internet explorer 7 as my web browser, but it keeps freezing and coming up as 'not responding' in my task manager. I have to end it and restart it, and its happening more and more often. It doesn't seem to matter what site I'm on, it does it. Its getting very frustrating, and very difficult to do anything on the net!

Anyone know how to solve this?

Run Windows Update recently ? Might be an update that fixes it if you havent run an update lately.

Thanks. I've tried updates, its all up to date. Doesn't seem to help any.

It is probably an add-in crashing. Skype, Norton, SnagIt all install add-ins. Or those toolbars - don't use any. Or even antivirus that intercept http traffic to scan such as nod32, avast.

In short - look at the windows event log for clues on what application crashed and disable the add-in or change its configuration.

You might need to reinstall IE7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

the other option is upgrade IE7 to IE8 or install Firefox

How did you get on? im thinking virus my self. but i know windows 7 has some real issues.

first off i would suggest that you get your self somthing like avast free edition. and do a boot time scan with that. run malwarebytes and spybot. with avast just delete any thign it finds normally ok

those programs find lots i suggest taking your computer into a computer store that is reliable and getting them to clean it out for you.

run at own risk (havent had any problems my self)

combofix is a very good program. but some say that it is dangerous to use but have had no problems my self.

do a download a program called hi jack this and do a scan post the log back here so i can see what is hapening.

if all else fails. often IE 7 gets corupt short cuts. what i have done to fix similar problems after making sure there are no viruses on my machine.

download a fresh good copy of IE 7 from microsoft

delete all short cuts to IE 7 as these become corupt. go to add remove programs remove IE 7 if shown in there

now go to ad remove windows components remove it from there

go to c:\program files\internet explorer and delete all of the contents out of this folder, some will say carnt get rid of and others will pop back instantly but do what you can. reboot your pc and install that copy of IE 7 you downloaded should all be good after that.

those would be the two main causes of your problems. also run ccleaner. that will help clear any viruses in your application data.

EDIT: Just an after thought going back to add ons. i had a clients computer that was crashing and it was the adobe flash player add on. i stoped the add on from running then reinstalled the flash player. restarted the browser and it fixed it so previous comments may also be on the correct track. let me know how you got on

Thanks for the info.
The reset I did of IE seems to have fixed all my problems. Getting rid of all the toolbars seems to have fixed it, as it hasn't frozen once since - sure makes using the internet much easier!

i like maxthon. i find that when you clean out a computer. viruses seem to hide in the firefox entries in the registry :( not often but it does hapen

Try doing the usual things like deleting temp internet files and cookies and reset to default settings in all catagories under the tools menu

I had problems with IE7 so I downloaded IE8 and things got even worse.
I ended up downloading Firefox 3 and all my problems with IE just disappeared.

How does this comment help? Soobgirl already replied saying uninstalling the toolbars solved the problem...

er as the saying goes better late than never :-)
just a word of advise in regards recommending Maxthon it is a small install for one reason only it uses the same files that IE uses but fire fox on the other hand is a complete browser using its own files for internet browsing/rendering as does google chrome and opera that being said maxthon does for ie what firefox and chrome does internaly ,,ie tabbed browsing, popup stopping, website logon caching, and it'll clean out the temp file and cookies properly when closed unlike IE which says it will but never quite does it
