Can someone tell me where the Reset process gets its fresh O/S install information from?

As I understand it, the Reset process can be either retaining Apps and Data, or a clean sweep with just the O/S reinstalled .... in that case the C: drive is wiped first, so where are the fresh install files located?

Tks.

I usually start by searching for "Windows 10 Media Creation Tools" and create a USB stick.

I have assumed that for a fresh install the files come off the USB stick.

I am hazy about the install and retain process.... I have assumed fresh Windows files come off the USB stick also.

I am not sure if the system drive is wiped first.... never worried.

That all sounds fine except that a USB stick with an O/S copy is not required to perform the Reset/

Here is an interesting article on Windows Reset.

https://www.theverge.com/21264104/windows-10-reset-os-reboot-troubleshoot-microsoft

Extract from the article:

In both cases, I was able to save an otherwise unusable PC by doing a reset, which removes all (or most) of the files and apps on the hard drive and reinstalls Windows 10.

I see computers that are quite screwed up so I use the USB stick.

But I see in the article you can do a Reset in safe mode.... which I haven't tried before.

Windows Reset will use files that Windows stores away in a separate partition for this action. When it says "OS reinstalled" it is just erasing the boot disc and installing Windows from that partition. If that partition doesn't exist then yes, you will need a bootable media such as ISO I(DVD or USB).

So if you Reset an old computer you will have to go through installing all the Windows updates.

@freitasm ... yes, that was what I thought too, but still wonder how it handles the Product Code if the USB stick option is chosen.
