As you can see, this is regarding the Apple Remote application for the iPhone.

For the life of me, i cant get it to work.

Im using Windows Vista Ultimate + McAfee.

The app will not connect to iTunes UNLESS the firewall side of Mcafee is turned off.

iTunes.exe is added tothe allowed list, as shown below;

When I turn the firewall off, the application works perfectly every time, with it turned on. It doesnt.

Can anyone give me some ideas? im really lost :S

Perhapes it's not iTunes? Does McAfee have an option to notify you of all connection attempts from unknown programs? This could help...

Hi MF, thanks for your response.

I had come to the conclusion that the problem is with Mcafee, because prior to the installation of McAfee, the remote was working fine.
However, the option you are suggesting is either VERY deeply hidden in the McAfee suite, or it just isn't there.

I am taking another look now, but it isnt looking hopeful.

It's not just iTunes that you need to unblock, but mDNSResponder.exe as well.

Thanks for your response mfb,

Unfortunately, I have just added that to the allowed list and still I cannot connect.

EDIT: I just restarted my computer, and now its working fine :)

Thanks for your help.

No problem. I wasn't 100% certain that was all you needed, but it's definitely a component - mDNSResponder is the Bonjour part of the equation that the Remote app is using. Once it gets a response from Bonjour telling it there's an iTunes library on the PC, I understand it then connects directly to iTunes.

Bonjour (or more correctly, Zeroconf or multicast DNS) is actually pretty neat when it works properly.

simple get rid of McCaffies (Mcstuffies) and use Avast home and the windows firewall

there are two problems a computer faces today McCaffies (Mcstuffies) and Norton (snorton) as both like to over complicate the hell out of easy use

I couldn't get remote application to find library. I had both ports open on Mcafee and had allowed access to both Itunes and bonjour. Could only get to find library with Mcafee disabled. In windows Vista Control Panel went to programs and repaired Bonjour. Works all the time now. Hope this helps someone else.
