if you have windows 7 running 1080p on a 15.6" laptop:

if i keep fonts at 100% they're too small, and my taskbar icons are too small.

if i make fonts at 150%, some videos/pics/words of some programs are blur (ie some programs are "tricked" into thinking i dont have a 1080p screen, but a smaller one, and then the pixels are scaled and they become blur

).

is there any way of getting the best of both worlds? (sorry if i'm not making any sense)

I'm interested too, because I was thinking of getting my folks a new monitor but I was worried the high res might cause them issues. I was under the impression that Windows 7 scaling was much improved.

Is it only certain programs having problems?

i have a 24" monitoe, 1080p is just perfect. but on my 15" laptop this is what i've done (not a bad achievement!)

res 1080p, at 100% scaling.
increase all the font size to 12 pt under "advanced setting" in "windows color". increase scroll bar to 24. use large icons on desktop.

go to mouse properties and increase pointer size.
use 150% scaling in ie8.

two setbacks:
there is no way of increasing size of taskbar icons nor "window text" (some residual small lettering in recent items, shutdown, and some folder titles).

?3rd setback:
i wonder is windows explorer dwm upscaling is better than windows media player upscaling. it appears now low res clips are more pixellated than before. i wont try going back though too much hassle.

4th setback - some lettering is weird in ie8.

update: do not use the scale it to any other than 100% (even if checking the xp box). many programs can't handle it eg games ... now that i'm back 100% all my games are so much sharper! arrrgh was fooled big time before this!

What I usually do in these situations is under Display Properties, choose the Medium (125%) setting. It makes everything bigger, but not too big. Have found that fine for people who cannot see the small stuff.

I get there by right clicking on desktop -> Change Screen Resolution -> click 'Make Text and other items larger or smaller'
