Not sure if anyone here will be able to help but,

Since a few days ago every time I sign into WLM it freezes (like 1 second after contact list appears). I have tried, uninstalling, reinstalling and even trying to go back to MSN Messenger 7.5 but same happens every time. Frozen.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Or any suggestions on how I might solve it.

As a big messenger adict and I wana get back on ASAP.

It was freezing on my Laptop too but then I did a format and installed Vista Beta 2, which it works fine on (As it does when I boot into Vista instead of XP on my Desktop)

Firewall configuration? Router configuration? New software installed?

Wont be the router because I can sign in fine with Vista, 99% sure it's not firewall related because it does actually sign in, it freezes just after.

The only common piece of software that was installed on both machines prior to this problem was the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor, but I have removed that with no change.

Im under the impression that such things as contact lists are stored on a server not your actual computer.
Just like a website these things can take a while to load, especially on a server that runs IM services.
Pherhaps you could wait until we get "FASTER CHEAPER" Internet.......

The contact list is stored on the server, but cached locally so that it only downloads changes to the contact list. Even so, a full contact list download would only take about a minute or less. It is actually loading my contact list, just freezes a moment later.

I have the exact same problem with both my main desktop PC and my laptop (different MSN accounts too!): it logs in, then freezes.
Everything worked fine until about 3 days ago.  Windows Messenger and Trillian both work fine, but MSN/Live Messenger are simply broken.  Very weird.

BTW, my secondary desktop PC is running Vista Beta 2 and Live Messenger runs fine on it.  Come to think of it, this all started the same day I installed Vista!

Yes same. It seems that it was the Windows XP firewall that was causing my problem. As soon as I disabled it and did a restart Messenger was all good again.

As I have a hardware firewall, disabling the Windows one should not cause any security issues. Give it a go and see if it helps.

I just figured out that it was my crappy d-link router causing the problem.  I hate that thing.

yeah, I had major ises following the release of 8.02... contacts could se I was online, but I couldn't see them... did lots of checking and MS indicated it was a firewall issue, even though wml indicated no issues... seems to me the beta was far more stable...

anyway, I'm back to 7.5 and happy

There is a connection issue with WLM8. A fix is in the works.

Check that your date and time are right as wlm wont load your contact list if it isn't

Actually thats not true. Ive had the date and time on my system set differently while testing some things and been using WLM at the same time with no issues.

The current problem with WLM is a connection one and its at the server side. Nothing to do with your PC
