Dear GZers,
I am looking at replacing some work computers.

How much of a hole can I get myself into by purchasing a desktop running 64 bit win7 pro.

I know that 'most' 32bit applications are 'supposed' to run ok.

Is that your experience?

Horror stories? Advice?

No hole for me. I use 64-bit Windows 7 with 4GB RAM and would not go back to 32-bit even though 32-bit applications are run in emulation and so more slowly. If you have 3GB or more of RAM then you should get a better experience with 64-bit, if more than 4GB then definitely 64-bit.

One of the major pitfalls no longer exists as there are now stable 64-bit browsers, plug-ins (e.g. Java, Flash) and extensions.

Software is usually not a problem unless it is old and just doesn't like any WIndows 7 full stop.
You could then use XP Mode to run it.
THe problem is usually drivers for hardware peripherals like older printers / copiers / scanners.

no problems here with win7 x64 and everything 32bit. been running this way for 3(?) years

TIP: dont install 64bit Office Suite (unless you need excel spreadsheets with 2m+ rows). The 32bit version is what is deployed in >90% of cases and is the best option. Most office add-ons haven not been developed for 64bit office.

I have had a few programs designed for windows 2000/xp that run in 7 32 bit but caused errors in 64 bit.

Never really been a problem for any program updated in the last 5/6 years though.

As per others been running 64bit for some years now without any problems.
