In the past I have pulled the drive out and done it on the IDE or SATA of a computer then it has been fine when put back on another computer.

Anyway, I am not wanting to open these seagates as there is no way to cleanly open them (they are clipped closed) and I really want the warranty to remain intact since it seems that the 2TB's seem to die like crazy.

Is there another tool that can either fake windows out into allowing it to happen, or else a bootable live dvd that can change the drives over?

Are you going for performance or redundancy?

For redundancy you are stuck with using something like robocopy and doing a scheduled sync (/MIR).

For performance you are never going to get the benefits out of USB anyway.

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

I am really wanting a pick up and go backup of the music collection, so I can just yank the drive and take it offsite and put another in its place and re-mirror it. I have extended the USB to the basement so the drives are semi-secure from the computer they are connected to, which is about as good as I will be able to get for now with the odd swap of the drive.

I cant make a copy of it because of the bloody path length limitation, if I torrent to in place I can make paths as long as I like, or if I copy it in via a mapped drive letter to half way down the directory tree, but anything like xcopy, robocopy etc will bail when copying all the files to another drive via the root of the drive.

It all works fine on the drives that I have made dynamic in the PC and then put into a USB case, so I am thinking I could just make a dynamic disk and then DD it onto the USB drives to get it happening. Bit of a pain but better than losing warranty on what must be the least reliable drives ever made (2TB)
