How abouts installing itunes. I mean the ipod is designed to work with it...and it may resolve the problem.

Worth a go. It will install the latest apple usb driver (and leave it behind if iTunes is uninstalled later i think)

I had a very similar thing happen recently and it was due to something related to Eset NOD32. Sometimes I got a BSOD but often I didn't.

i may be way off-track re your problem but try uninstalling NOD32 and try the iPod again. If it's ok, reinstall the NOD32. This sorted my problem which was quite severe I.e control/alt/delete did not work.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
