I had a very similar thing happen recently and it was due to something related to Eset NOD32. Sometimes I got a BSOD but often I didn't.
i may be way off-track re your problem but try uninstalling NOD32 and try the iPod again. If it's ok, reinstall the NOD32. This sorted my problem which was quite severe I.e control/alt/delete did not work.
