I'd be very concerned about that hinged kick stand and its durability. Seems like gimmicky design to me.

mattwnz:
They could call it windows surface. But personally I am not a fan of the same OS being used for both touch screen devices (devices for consumption) and desktops (productivity PCs). When using windows 8 I never used the metro interface. And i am sure if I was using it as a touch screen device, I many not use the windows interface much. The switching between the two is quite jarring, and some metro touch screen settings can only be done when in desktop mode. Apple haven't yet got both osx and ios OS's as part of the same os, and I am not sure if they have immediate plans to either.

android is heading down that path with devices like the padfone.

makes perfect sense really, say for example i was developing a comic book app, i would write 1 app that worked on a phone, a tablet and a desktop pc.

this one app, would have different views/interfaces (similar to webpages that change depending on the screen size or media type), on the phone i would have a small interface that defaulted to showing comics panel by panel when viewing.  on the tablet i would default to showing the entire page and have a much large interface.  on the pc, i could have a explorer like application with a list in the left pane and the comic pages in the right/main pane etc.

this one app would all share the same storage, most settings etc. I would implement the core of the application once and only need to customize the interface for each device (reusing a lot of shared code as well).

just because they bring touch to windows doesnt mean you cant still use a keyboard mouse, they arent going away any time soon.

this is the way the tech is going, no real doubt about that, just a question of when.... probably when asus/samsung/hp/whatever make a 7" win8 tablet then some does the same but with phone capabilities.

also if they called in "Windows Surface" a lot of people probably would think its only a touch OS (which a lot of people seem to be thinking now)

langers1972: I have to say it does look pretty good on first impression, the keyboard in the cover is something Apple must be thinking 'Aaagh, why didn't we do that?'

+1, although my questions are related to the connection, reliability over time and power supply.

Oh and that they announce another product with no availability and pricing...

Wait so did Apple announce which month and date they are releasing iOS6 and Mountain Lion besides saying 'This fall'? So if Microsoft states releasing Surface and Windows 8 'this holiday' without giving a date, it's bad marketing but when Apple does it, it's ok.

iOS6 and Mountain Lion are software things. We are talking about hardware.

When Apple announces new hardware it's either available immediately, or they give the dates.

Nothing announced on NZ dates

but they did announce what the RT version of Surface will be available at Windows 8 general availability, the  Pro i5 version 3 months later

we all know what the pricing will need to be around for it to be popular

Problem is that if Microsoft announces dates, they announce the day Windows 8 will be available for which there is no official date yet. I bet if this tablet was already released and they were to do an upgrade next year on the hardware, they would not mind announcing the date. When the slim Xbox 360 was revealed at E3, they released it a week later in US and this was announced.

I am going to be annoyed though if this is US only release like the Zune player.
