The thing is that telecom ditched their one as it was dated, so were they ahead of their time? I am sure they paid a lot for their's too. They haven't advertised the 'Surface' in that ad either . It is all quite confused.

You realise it's based on the new "tile" look introduced with the Metro Windows Phone and Windows 8 UI style, right?

Distorter: Am I missing something? There has been multiple Windows logos in the past 25 years :-S

Microsoft != Windows. Windows is a product with its own logo, as it's Office, Sharepoint, Xbox, Bing, Windows Phone and so on.

Yes, and that is what makes it kind of stupid, because interfaces change. So as soon as the AKA Metro interface is replaced, the logo becomes dated. Look at apple, I don't think they have altered their logo and font for years, and they don't tie it to a particular product or interface style which can change. I can understand why they updated the windows logo to reflect the square look, as it is a progression, but now the microsoft logo is very similar to the windows one, and you get confusion. eg someone here also missed that this was the 'microsoft' logo and not the windows logo.

Here is an interesting composition showing current Microsoft product logos (not company logos).

Also the opinion from a professional in Brand New blog:

[After] the successful launch of Surface, and the preview of Office (see below, after store photos), that have all introduced Metro to the larger masses the new logo does not come as a surprise. It falls perfectly in place with what we?ve been seeing. Leading to a general shrug of the shoulders when it comes to this logo.

I described it as ?Meh? on internet television. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this logo but there is also nothing absolutely exciting about it. You can?t really hate it, because how can you hate four squares arranged in a square ? if you hate on it, you have serious anger management issues. And you can?t really love it, because how can you love four squares arranged in a square ? if you love it, you have seriously low standards.

All these statements are to say that Microsoft did the right thing: they are sticking to their design strategy and they are not antagonizing anyone. Win-win. The only real Lose I see is the new congestion of four-square logos in the Microsoft universe: Windows 8 is four tilted squares, Microsoft Store is four squares with squares in the squares, and now, the main Microsoft logo. Could get confusing.
