I agree that the tiles are a waste of time on traditional desktops. What they should have done was kept the desktop for pcs and give tiles for tablets only. Regardless its very easy to disable with 3rd party addons.

Microsoft could announce as soon as this week how it will implement the two most important user experiences in Windows 8.1 “Blue”: Boot to desktop and the return of the Start button.


Windows SuperSite's Paul Thurrott has some screen shots of the new Start Button and the common desktop wallpaper from a recent Blue preview build.

Looks like it is going to be quite an improvement. The current jarring between the start screen and the desktop, and the way the start screen can't really be customised, are two of the bad things about windows 8.
