Handbrake, free. Not easy to master but after a few attempts you will know the best settings.

AnyDVD HD, not free but with 20% until Sunday 20th.

To the user suggesting sourcing a paid software through piracy, don't do that suggestion in this forum again.

To the OP, I know everyone does it. Just remember format shift is only allowed in New Zealand for your own home videos and for music - movies aren't in the list.

I really hope they change this to allow backing up of your own dvds, someone I work with has over 1000 dvds that she has bought, they are insured but some of them are quite hard or impossible to find now from what she said.

gzt: Handbrake does everthing and free.

Ive gone with the DVDFab - Handbrake combo. I ripped the movie, it was about 7.5gb, used handbrake and its down to 4.5gb. I was hoping for 1.5gb file . I made it into 1080p (I think) so that's why its so big I guess?

When you guys do it how big do your files come out?

You'll want to check the standard definition option. Most DVDs in NZ are PAL so 576p for 16:9 normally. Setting the correct aspect ratio and using decent x264 settings is a bit of a pain. Try Googling for a guide.

Omg this is the most frustrating thing ever. I have now got the file size lower, by reducing the resolution, its about 2.5gb now. I want to put it through Handbrake put now Handbrake says it may be copy protected?

WTF am I doing wrong? Why is this so difficult? I simply want to rip a dvd I own, have it DVD quality, looking for around 1.5gb max, although I know it should be smaller.

Why cant is be that simple?

Because there are many, many variables when it comes to video stream digitisation. Simply put, there is no reliable one-click solution.

urban: I use MakeMKV to backup all my fav dvd and blurays (with the latter, I use handbrake to resize after ripping).

Sorry to butt in, I have a video query that I hope some of you experts can advise.

I have some iPhone taken videos. They play on a non iOS device sideways, due to the stupid way Apple places I assume, non standard exif data on photos and videos. Fine now, just take movies and photos holding the iPhone landscape with camera to the top left.

Can any of you advise on software that can rotate the video? Preferably without transcoding although perhaps that cannot be avoided. Wish to retain the best quality possible.

If the film is shot vertically most software will play it back vertically. I assume Apple have taken notice of this phenomenon and added a feature to fix the issue.

You'll be looking for a video scripting language to rotate the video and output it to a new file. I can recommend AviSynth for this particular purpose. Rotating the stream would simply require a script containing something like TurnLeft()

It is not simple because everyone has different requirements for file size/quality/audio. I don't think you are going to get DVD quality in 1.5gb for a 2 hour movie but you might get dvd like quality for an 80 minute movie ( you will never get the same quality when using lossy compression anyway).

Download the latest handbrake released in the last few days i think -- it has some good enhancements.

Legally rip your dvd to a folder structure.Plenty of free programs can do this.

Open your folder using handbrake and select the apple TV 2 preset. Adjust values (if necessary)...

Picture tab, Width 720 , anamorphic loose. And, Video Filters, set decomb to default

Video tab, set frame rate to Same as source.

You could make the file smaller by changing constant quality to a higher number than 20, and x264 preset to very slow (perhaps make file smaller by doing more source analysis)

Audio could be left as default although you can remove a track if you don't need the surround passthrough.

I like this setting, you get the sources original resolution for the lowest file size and good quality (not best quality but who really notices the difference without frame by frame inspection). And, it lets you play on IOS devices / apple tv with surround sound.

It won't work in all cases, sometimes the wrong audio track is defaulted and other times you may need to burn english subtitles for foreign audio segments.

Tell me about it! I'm currently trying to find the best combination using that now. I'm using Plex to stream via my PS3, and its a struggle to find the correct mix of codecs to use to ensure I can have 5.1 sound passed through the optical cable to my A/V receiver.
