Here is the list of Windows Updates recently applied. Notice the ones on the 18th October were the roll ups released when Windows 8.1. went out for consumers.

Posted in the Microsoft forum (free support, yeah, right). No response, only some other fellow user posting links to these things I have already tried.

@MicrosoftHelps on Twitter was of no use as their suggestion was to... post in the forums because "a moderator would help". After I pointed out there was no reply there they came up with a "it may take up to 72 hours to someone to reply" - and that was after a week.

So here we go, performed a refresh on this laptop, and guess what? Windows Update works. Obviously not a problem with my network connection or the web service. But we will never know now...
