Then there's drivers (updated to latest video, latest Intel RST, Intel Inf, etc?) and so on... If you are using SSD have you disabled Superfetch, Defragmentation, enabled TRIM (Windows would do it by default but not if you copied an image from another drive)?

windows 8 is fine just happened with the 8.1 update. The only antivirus is the built in one. Yes have SSD and had clean installed windows 7 home premium on it then updated to windows 8 pro. Updated the latest windows 8.1 drivers from hp site and also from intel to try and fix it.
I feel the windows defender is adequate enough for me so dont have any other antivirus installed

Apologies. It was all installed in the system thati bought buti do plan to check it later. Was late last night. I just wished a high end system would work out of the box. I have discovered windows 7 hidden under all the layers of 8.1

I shall now first suspect incompatible apps for any future weird behaviour

andrewNZ: There are (should be) settings in the Nvidia control panel for which GFX card is used when. My Win7 laptop has it, and driver updates haven't affected it.

You can force it to only use one or the other all the time. You can also change the preferred card for many programs

I read that on Google at1 am last night. Hoping this will give maximum battery life on battery. Thanks

Batwing: Technicolor modem is awaiting update from telecom. Set dns servers manually in windows 8.1 browser loading issues.

I tried that this 5 am when my kid woke up ... and fixed all my browsing woes ... glad to knowi still have some trouble shooting left in me :D

Best way to play flac? I don't think vlc is working. Scared of installing random junk 'codecs' ...

And the best sandbox app? I presume sandbox is better than virtual add I need to installa while new layer of os in virtual?

Try importing contacts from say, outlook express, into the mail app or is it the people app....
Good luck, about the only way is to import them into something like google contacts, or outlook/lives alternative.

Want to use the Mail app AND Use a pop address like most kiwis using isp mail? (personally I dont)....

So you gave up on the mail app and installed Windows Live Mail....
Now try getting it to work nicely with any of the touch apps...say to pull up your people contacts, or send a photo from the photos app.

Having one common menu (the charms bar) for common tasks like printing, or attaching, or searching...
But then make the menu context sensitive, so different apps in different states are disallowed access to specific parts.
I'm used to print, search (not so much attaching/sharing) being in the app, not the OS options, so this always feels alien, and frustrating when its missing.

Start menu searches not showing control panel items. I know its been fixed in 8.1, but gee wizz what a stuff up.

Brand new Samsung Windows 8 Tablet. Sign up a MS account, go to the store and download apps...
Good luck with that...1st I get a message the internet is slow and to try another internet connection..(I'm on ADSL 16mb down 1mb up, Wifi 3 meters away). I reboot & try again, and the apps just sit showing status pending.

Most of the touch apps wont work, updates needed, updates take hours & hours.

It offers to show my facebook photos in the photos app..
Good luck with that. It tells me there is a connection problem and to try again later. I've re-tried and its still not working.

I go to pin internet url's to the start menu from IE, the first 3 I make never show me the name/confirm prompt, and never show up.

(These next two are not necessarily Microsoft problem, as this is a samsung device)
I'm typing away on the docked keyboard, keyboard & mouse stop working. Confusion. Touch still works, try re-seat the dock. Seems to be ok.

20 Mins later Keyboard & Mouse stop working again. I think 'oh its the dock again' and try to re-seat it. I find actually the unit is totally frozen & unresponsive. Reboot & Start updates all over again.

When the keyboard dock is connected I still get the onscreen keyboard coming up...wtf?

Ahhh!!!.
I dont know if this device will last a week before it gets thrown out the window.

So I go to install office 2013 retail, and this happens...

so many questions, so much hate.. there are answers to a lot of your questions, go googling and you shall find some. for now i'll just answer this one... right-click your task bar in desktop and get the taskbar and navigation properties dialog up and you will find some options to control this behaviour

ok got another one - after sleeping it wakes up to a black screen. so put it to sleep again, wake it up and it wakes up properly. adolescent?

looking at google for fix ...

THanks for this, I had a look at it, but it doesn't seem like what i'm after, since the gesture i'm talking about doesn't involve a click. WIll try it though and see.

And a new one. I turn on the tablet & go connect to wifi. Its showing wifi networks from another location, a previous scan perhaps. So I wait for it to update. It doesn't. So i think okay, ill put it into airplane mode, then back to normal & it will re scan... nope.

The wireless option disappears, and now I don't have wireless. I check in device manager, its definitely enabled. After 10 minutes of stuffing around i choose 'troubleshoot' from the desktop network taskbar indicator, and finally it re-enables the wifi.

It sounds like an old driver. Try updating it.

i'm not allowed to update from intel as dell has locked it. I have updated the nvidia one already.

if I uninstall the dell driver will I run into problems? I used to be a fiddler .. I might have to do a complete pc backup before I try it. i'm not young anymore - used to spend a whole day fixing a bad decision to go against what the software allows

Can anyone explain if windows 8 treats store apps and desktop programmes differently? esp in terms of sandboxing? google is of little help. sites seem to treat store apps and desktop application using the term apps liberally to either mean either or both.

store apps are sandboxed, but can be built to share data between each other - and that data could be locally stored, or in the cloud. An example of sharing is the camera app taking a photo and then passing it to the photoshop app for editing, or a news app letting you share a link to an article out via a twitter or facebook app (or any app that will take a URL).

desktop apps continue to function as they have on previous versions of windows - i.e. if you run them in admin mode, there is virtually nothing stopping them from modifying registries, or overwriting files, or directly interacting with other desktop apps.

what's the reason for your question?

When one installs a program and then deletes it tonnes of empty folders and orphan files are left behind. Not to mention orphan registry entries that slow your computer down.

I am ocd and absolutely hates that.

Will deleting an app as opposed to program leave no rubbish behind?
