The concern is that there are probably hundreds of developers out there sitting on exploits just waiting for the end of xp to release them into the wild knowing that there will be no fix for xp.

It's expensive to maintain legacy gear. Why do we think Microsoft are halting support for XP even though there are 300 million computers still running it?

Because Microsoft want all the dollars from those 300 million computers being "forced" to upgrade ... it's probably just a big money-making con by a "consortium" made up of Microsoft and Windows PC makers to combat the "decline in sales". ;-)

Wrong answer. I wrote exactly about this yesterday.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't understand that a winking smiley means IT'S A JOKE. :-\

What im wondering if secure sites such as banks will still allow XP users to use them..

Eg banks have safety guarantee policy's but they may not cover you if you're using an outdated OS

For some, software won't work, hardware won't work, but it's a 12yo OS, That's been pretty good support IMO

I would like to test it out, but I would hazard a guess that they will do it by browser version rather than OS. If you visit with IE6, do they still serve you content?

For most businesses with POS terminals and other mass deployed XP solutions, strategy is going to be to manage the risk at this point. Lock down USB any access through Group Policy or BIOS if you bought a business PC, Only have them on a LAN there they can access intranet and server backends and will never see the internet. Patch them fully through WSUS and then hopefully, plan for migration. If they are not off it yet, it is too late to be off before the deadline so mitigation is all that is left.

I worry for big companies that still have fleets of users on XP. My brother in laws girlfriend works for Downers and still has an XP laptop for business use that is free to connect to the internet and also VPN back into the company network. Not smart.

People who access internet banking on computers running Windows XP will continue to be covered if their accounts are hacked, after Microsoft stops supporting the operating system next month, banks have decided.

See, why do we need to upgrade?

So here's the question:

My laptop works just fine. I bought it second hand with XP but it would run windows 7 nicely... I don't want to buy a whole new one just cos the support for XP is finished. How do I go about upgrading it to windows 7 legally???
