I have to restore to Windows 8, download an update to Windows 8, then finally upgrade to Windows 8.1. Several gigabytes of downloads later (at least double the size of the Windows 8.1 ISO), I can finally use the laptop.
Where do you get the media to restore to windows 8?
I have not destroyed the restore partition on my laptop. I can optionally write it to USB from within Windows, but haven't bothered yet. I had hoped Asus would supply Windows 8.1 media, but I'm not sure Windows 8 keys are compatible with 8.1, despite being told by Microsoft that I could use a retail disk.
joker97: did you buy it from a local shop? can you use their demo model to write a restore USB key?
That's an interesting question. I expect this would probably work, depending on how the restore image is prepared. So long as the licence is compatible, it would probably work with different models, albeit with potential driver issues.
My focus has been on getting a clean OS install of the latest version, which is why I enquired about using the retail disks.
