uninstall whatever antivirus it comes with and then install avast free before you do anything else

and don't click on everything that appears in front of you as most of them are viruses!

one tip to know whether what you're about to click is likely ok or likely deception -

make sure you have avast running - tick
hover your pointer over the link [the words you're about to click] and its web address should magically appear on the bottom left of your screen
- example if the link says trademe, the web address should take you to http://www.trademe.co.nz / something something something
- if it's a virus it will take you somewhere else, eg some random website

Thanks to all for advice.  Reset to Factory, installed the 'right' VLC and Avast. All going shell :-)
