If that doesn t work then install fresh windows 7 on new SSD, boot off Win PE or other type of Windows boot CD (UBCD etc.), manually copy all data across from old SSD (program files, windows folder etc.) to new SSD, shutdown, boot to new SSD...

Unfortunately that's the avenue (dead end?) I went down yesterday with no success. However I'm pleased to report that I have a decent working system again. Here's the steps I took.
I installed a fresh copy of Win7Pro on the new drive, then copied my original User/Pgm Files/Pgm Data folders to the new C drive. That actually worked for most programmes. I needed to reinstall Flash and MS Office and the computer has spent most of the day downloading endless MS updates. Hundreds of the little buggers! Otherwise everything is working perfectly. Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas.
And hey... the Highlanders played a demo game of rugby last night so all is good with the world. ;-)
