I still haven't been asked to upgrade despite my $WindowsBT folder showing around 4.77GB. It's been like three days! :-(

Your pc is waiting your turn in the reservation queue

It could be 3 days, it could be 3 weeks

Download the ISO if you want to install it now

Both my parents and inlaws have rushed for it, having been landed with Windows 8 on recent laptop purchases.
I personally still do not see the need for a unified OS across PC and mobile, but Windows 10 at least does this in a much more useable way for the end user.

On that front alone I think it's a total win.  It's basically Windows 7 upgraded for the end user, and that's what they wanted, not what they had shoved in front of them in Windows 8.

Just waiting now for a laptop to tell me it's ready to install.  That's the only downer I've got at this initial stage, in that the windows update method (from flag on the taskbar) route doesn't show any progress indication at all, so I don't know if it's close or doing anything at all?...

all this angst with waiting can be removed by downloading the ISO https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Thanks Nathan

If it's not ready itself tonight I'll start again and go down that route.

Cheers

Quick access is great.

Early impressions, I think MS have done a really great job with 10. A long wait, but I was more than happy to jettison the schizophrenic 8 UI.

I really like the idea of an integrated OS across PCs, tablets and phones - problem is that MS are a little too late for me as I am now fully entrenched in google and unlikely to move away (for mail, photos, music, cloud storage).

Edge has a lovely fast stripped back feel ... but ultimately it needs extensions if it is to compete with Chrome for me.

I've always liked Windows 8, especially on the tablet, I even liked the modern apps on both the PC and tablet, the only annoying thing was the disconnect between the Start page and the Desktop. The Windows 10 fix for this really works well, although I've only tried it on the tablet so far. I guess that on the PC I'll just stick to desktop mode, but on the tablet I switch depending on what I'm doing. For example, when I wake up and browse the news sites and catchup with email, I use tablet mode, but for other uses, I switch to desktop mode.
The trouble is remembering which mode I'm in. It is obvious when you look, but too often I swipe an app to close it, but it just falls off the bottom of the screen, then it's tricky to 'grab' it and bring it up to close it using the 'x'. Apart from that, after a couple of days I'm really enjoying the improvements.
I did use the Media Creation Tool on the tablet, and yesterday I actually accepted the upgrade invite on the PC, but I'm happy to wait for that to happen. Someone mentioned the lack of feedback on the process, and I do think that is a problem. I seem to have the download, and I did get a pop-up on the MS site which I was visiting for something entirely unrelated to the upgrade, it said something like 'if you're looking for your upgrade, you're in the queue'. But I did notice this morning Event Viewer noted an error with the upgrade -- I'll just ignore this for the moment, but I have no clue whether this is self-correcting, or if there is a real problem.

Reading on-line (because everything on the internet is true) the "best" method to ensure a problem-free update is to wait and install only via the W10 app.  Even here I have been reading about issues with compatibility and numerous drivers not working etc when doing a forced install using the generic ISO download. Is this true?

Yes I am still waiting, patiently for all 3 laptops in my house.  My Geek-side however is bagging to just get on with it.

I installed using the ISO and had no problems at all, this was on a 6 year old laptop.

My install via the official update was completely seamless, painless and relatively quick - I experienced nothing like the problems I read with others trying to pre-empt this. So if you can wait, I'd recommend.

upgrading via Windows Update or by upgrading by downloading the ISO and running setup.exe from inside your current activated Windows isntall has exactly the same outcome

So far I really like it, the free upgrade gives me a lot more than I had with Win7 starter ☺

I like that each day I find something has been fixed due to the complusory updates lol

That said Edge so far is disappointing as it uses lots of resources & often gives me a web page not responding msg that Chrome & Opera don't but I'm sure an update will fix that soon enough

I'll check tonight if I have this progress indicator option with a right click too.
