MS has some history of auto installing updates , when set to notify only, simply because MS thought they were important.
Set to "Never check for updates", as past experience has shown MS will push some through regardless other wise

I see one of the links about this issue blames IT for not having centrally/server managed Winupdates.
Well thats all very nice for large companies with in staff IT or contracted REGULAR IT support/checks.
Many companies dont work like that & ONLY call IT when something is broken. In these cases server managed Winupdates isnt that good an idea as there
is no-one to keep an eye on it (Ive seen sites like this with no updates for many many many months due to WSUS issues )

This is a pretty outrageous issue. we have had a couple of new machines upgrade themselves though they have never "reserved" their copy!

My 8.1 machine was hanging a bit on the login screen.

Windows update had many repeats of failed to install windows 10. Unexplained. Some articles indicate the failure is the outcome of Microsoft forcing the download but not yet having permission to install.

Uninstalling KB3035583 and KB2976978 then a reboot and hiding those updates has resolved the login screen issue.

I followed the guides to disable this mechanism, it's absolutely appalling.

I have two machines with less than 5GB free space on their main drive (respectively 32GB SSD HTPC and a 64GB SSD laptop) and the forced downloading process has pretty much clogged up the drives and crashed these computers

With such behaviour they've really ensured I will stick to Windows 7.

It would seem that the attitude is that we "lease" or borrow our devices and we are not the true owners, I thought this attitude was going and was the realm of Cupertino not Redmond these days, guess I was wrong.

I'm personally stunned that a MS representative hasn't popped into this thread to say "Windows 10 is NOT downloading without permission"... Nathan has made a couple of posts including a link to how to STOP it downloading, but no comment about the veracity of the subject claim.

Yeah, windows update is a nasty tool. Starting from random reboot during important video chat with clients (coz need to update) ending traffic consuming win10 preload and sneaking "metrics" spy stuff. People on limited inet are "happy" I suppose.

I think MS representative cannot say you something that contradict company's policies. And the idea is to push as many people as possible to win 10.

Yes, and this would be somewhat more tolerable if their product direction and stability was moving in a direction people wanted, but feedback we are getting is that it isn't. Sadly MS aren't listening!

Yes, and this would be somewhat more tolerable if their product direction and stability was moving in a direction people wanted, but feedback we are getting is that it isn't. Sadly MS aren't listening!

In general I am OK with Windows 10, it is early days for Windows as a service and there is a lot of work needed, I do not believe they should be trying to force it by stealth and I do not believe it is Enterprise ready.

Is it just downloading the files, or is it doing the install was well (without asking)? Because the article only states that the files were being download, which is not too much of the big deal, unless you have limited bandwidth.

But I haven't seen any reports of it installing without permission.

Considering that it's called Windows Update, and Windows 10 is an update to windows, maybe you would expect Windows Update to download updates for windows...

Putting files on someones equipment without consent is a liberty and something that should not be done.
