On the desktop I only ever use the wheel when I am reading text. Anything else, like scrolling a gallery etc I will use the scrollbar. Ergonomics on a wheel are crap. Never got why they dont put it on the side of the mouse where your thumb rests. Hell, even a wheel that scrolled horizontally above the buttons would be better than the finger straining vertical scrollwheel.

My mouse thumb 'rests' over 12 buttons. So, I wouldn't be in favour of putting a scroll wheel there:)

I guess it all ends with what you get used to or what you train yourself to get used to.
