lurker:

I use it to clean files once in a while, though I turn off the Active Monitoring in the Options.

so active monitoring option should be turned off of ccleaner

JayADee: We finally bought the pro version of Ccleaner this year just to support the programmer. Been using the free version for years. We don't let it run at startup though.

On an older laptop malware and startup programs like Skype and your anti virus can really slow it down. Turn off any startup programs you don't need (you can use ccleaner for this), run some malware scans to get rid of any junk that's been installed by accident and consider just using Microsoft's own AV since it seems to run with less impact.

thanks jayAdee

12 years old according to wikipedia -  But I've been using it for many years now and its great - I admit I've even ran the portable version on servers before and it hasn't caused any issues.

Checked out my Dads laptop over the weekend.  Windows 10, running slow as a dog (that is running slow?).

Turned out to be the AntiVir antivirus program getting over hungry with the resources.  As mentioned by someone up above, I just removed it all and turned the Windows one back on.
Not sure what a good actual alternative is if you want something over and above the base Microsoft offering.  I hear Norton has improved and has quite a low footprint these days.

Not saying it's perfect, but a working laptop is better than a 'safe' one that is unusable.  If you've got a laptop, take a minute to go over the prebundled bloatware it undoubtedly came with.
