I use the tool at http://patch.mess.be/ to patch messenger to remove advertising, increase message length, etc etc

Give it a try and see what you think. If you choose to remove ads, you have to click 'I disagree' when prompted with the license agreement.

Note: some of the features of this tool are a breach of the messenger EULA so its up to you if you want to use them ;)
