I've been using Windows since it was available for public beta. It 10 works great, and there's not a heck of a lot of difference. The two parallel control panels is pretty dumb. Give W10 a chance rather than stepping back 8 years.
I am no longer a power user and my demands are pretty simple, mainly just browsing and streaming videos. I have Win 10 on one machine and Win 7 (my preferred option) on the others. Initially there were some irritations with 10 but it seems okay now and in practice I see little difference between it and Win 7, except it still has a tendency to put crap in the way that I don't want, such as an unnecessary sign-in screen every time it comes out of sleep mode. The main thing with 10 is the forced updates, which I have disabled in the Services menu so they no longer annoy me. Thanks Microsoft, but I will decide when I want to update something.

I still don't understand why there is the hate towards Win 10. Yes there have been issues with some updates but it's a vastly superior OS to Windows 7 with many features that make life so much eaasier.
Are people actually trying 10 and deciding they hate it because it's not Windows 7? If not wHat legiitimate issues do you have with it?
I certainly can understand the hate towards Windows 10 - although I don't share that extreme sentiment and do use 10 daily on my workstation and laptop (with a number of mods as many power users will have) - from forced upgrades / updates, broken drivers and settings, phone homes, bloatware and from my experience performance degradation.
I would rank the Windows desktop OS in stability out of the box as below:

As most desktop users don't have access to enterprise licencing they're left with Windows 7 vs Windows 10.
In most cases I would weigh up the cost / benefits and go with Windows 10 anyway however when particular stability and low maintenance is required (VM, lightweight server, terminal, machinery, kiosk, older hardware, seniors PC, offline box etc) I would still prefer Windows 7 for the time being; with a view to migrate to Linux or even mac OS where possible.

I agree, windows 10 (with classic shell installed) is far faster and more reliable than windows 7. Not to mention windows 7 is not that far from being EOL! (January 14, 2020) Getting a new laptop and trying to run an almost 8 year old O/S instead of getting windows 10 to do what you need is a pretty poor plan IMHO.
Thankyou! You have just solved my entire problem! I had never heard of classic shell... (yes you're dealing with a real n00b here!), and that's all I want, a start menu that looks like Windows 7! Looks like I can now buy any damn laptop I want! Thank you so much! :D
