Thanks Jase. That's weird as it loaded perfectly after that registry hack. I'll try my other apps tonight and see what happens.

I would say, if you want Win10 to run nice & fast, stop fiddling with it.
Dont install apps you dont REALLY 100% need. Keep it clean & with as few apps as possible loading on startup .

Also, dont install Winzip (since you mentioned it) . Its just bloatware now .
10's build in zip support if OK for most.
For RAR's , then install Winrar (if needed) .

You could install Malwarebytes , but set it to NOT load on startup . Just run it manually when you want to scan something

I've purged a lot of apps I wasn't using but are you saying I shouldn't be trying to customise it at all?

Got the startup menu sorted with the registry edit :)
Does anyone have the classic theme on Firefox working (or know where I can get it)?
Note this is for Firefox Quantum 59.0.1 (32 bit) - am I using the right version?

Hmm might have to look into that one. Cheers smile

I've found a copy of Windows Live Mail 2012. I can't seem to import my Outlook Express 6 messages into it however - it gives an error that "either the folder is empty or being used by another program" (neither of which are true). Any suggestions? I could use Outlook but I'd prefer to keep my two POP mailboxes separate (if possible).

if you search in google you will find the classic theme is a lost cause in windows 10 so I had just shown alternatives.

Outlook express 6 can be transferred to Mozilla Thunderbird mail .

I use it for gmail and Outlook mail .

New issue:
I purchased a WD Blue 4TB drive today to replacing my aging other WD ones. Connected it up using my cradle (which I tested the other day on this machine so I know it works) but it's not appearing in Disk Management. However, Device Manager shows it as an "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". If I power off the cradle, this disappears; turning it back on it reappears, so I know it's probably the hard drive.
Tried updating the driver, apparently there are (somehow) "no new drivers" for this device. Tried uninstalling and rebooting, but the issue is still there.
Any ideas? Do I need to take it back to the shop, or is this a Windows 10 (or driver) problem?

What is the cradle/enclosure?

It may not support 4 TB drives.

Also, check you are supplying the correct power, 3.5" drives will require auxiliary power.

It has its own power supply. Hadn't thought of that actually re drive size...
I guess I can install it in the case if it comes to it.
From memory it's one I got off Trademe. Will need to check the brand etc.

This is Windows 10 64 bit btw (sorry forgot to say that before). What's the maximum size it can handle?

I was referring to the 32bit enclosures being limited to 2TB by address limitations.

Windows 10 64bit is a bit hazy but says 16TB max for the machine including internal and external obviously needing a 64bit interface. Hopefully someone can explain it better.

Thanks for that. I think I'll try installing it inside the machine later tonight and see if that makes a difference.

As long as your motherboard supports large drives, which it should do if it is a new system. I would probably recommend you format the drive when it is directly connected to the motherboard as to rule out any quirks such as sector size conversion that an enclosure board might do. Then at least you will know when there is a need to connect it directly to a machine in the future that it will work.

You should not expect a 4 TB drive to work on a machine earlier than Windows 7 (Vista might work with patches but not XP).

If you intend to use it externally then I would recommend buying a newish enclosure, see this thread from a few days ago, it seems the Orico 3.5" enclosure (which also does 2.5" and supports up to 4 TB drives) may be suitable. It is sold directly by Orico on Aliexpress for about $25 or you can pick one up locally.
