Hmmm,
I was going down the line of a mother board fault but tonight I hooked up a monitor. Prior to this I had only been trying a pico projector as a second screen. It has a different screen resolution (much lower) and the laptop screen was defaulting to that resolution.
The monitor is the same resolution (1366 X 768) as is recommended for the laptop. I had been running 1280 X 768 to get a stable image. With the monitor connected the laptop automatically booted up to the recommended resolution. The monitor image was perfect whereas the laptop screen was back to the poor image with ghosting and broken/stripey icons in the task bar when the desktop was selected.
As before the Opera image on the laptop is stable but I have noticed the colour rendering in photos is poor with some colours particularly black and dark greys showing a blue colour. The colour renderng otherwise look to be OK
It is impossible to view anything on Chrome and IE and the same pretty well goes for Word and Excel where the image is jumping around.
Looks like it's coming down to the screen or the screen cable. Any suggestions on how the eliminate one or the other? Does the colour rendering give a clue?
Edit.
After posting I noticed a line appearing across the screen when I scrolled up and down. It's almost as if the lower part of the screen isn't scrolling as fast as the section of screen above the line and the text in that area becomes distorted as it passes through that area.
I've tried moving and twisting the screen cable particularly at the point there is the most flexing where it passes though the hinge area but the is no change for the better or worse when I do this.
