Yes, Linux is an option but I know less about it than Win 10. I expect I will be her help desk.
BTW down loaded Win 7 Pro from MS and burnt an install DVD. Installation went smoothly but would not accept the key as was suggested above.
Off to PBTech tomorrow.
Thank you all for your help.

This is the way its done for OEM recovery images, you will need to undertake the above steps manually if you use generic installation media. You should be able to leave the product key blank during setup, but if not just use one of the generic product keys in the second link above. You won't be able to activate these generic product keys over the phone or internet activation methods, only SLP/certificate-based.
It's very quick, should only take a minute or two. Can be faster than phone activation.
Spirax:
"ERROR - The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."
some time back...
MS , being difficult bstards who really dont care, decided that OEM WIN7 keys could NOT be used to download Win7 install disks. Retail keys only.
Yes it made no sense then, I guess nothing has changed.
Ive come come this a few times in the past.
PBTech will have a OEM Win7 disks, they should be able to burn one for you.

Err it makes perfect sense.. OEM keys are cheaper than retail keys, because all the support is meant to be dealt with by the OEM.
If you want support and free downloads from Microsoft, buy a full retail license.
